The Museum Association organises the National Museum Week every year as part of the collective promotion of museums. This year, the Museum Week takes place from 4 through 10 April. The theme is ‘Open up your world’. Oude Kerk is participating in the programme with various activities.
meet and greet with the restorers
The theme of the National Museum Week from 4 to 10 April is #OpenYourWorld. From Monday 4 to Friday 8 April, you can therefore take a look behind the scenes in the Sebastiaanskapel in Oude Kerk at the dismantling of Susan Philipsz’ sound installation and the restoration of the historic wallpaper in the mirror room. Every day at 11:00 and 15:00 there is a ‘meet & greet’ with one of our conservators (in Dutch). In a short talk of 15-30 minutes you will hear the ins and outs of the restoration of the Mirror Room and the wallpaper. Did you know, for example, that the room, just like the church room, is a mixture of elements from different eras that never existed at the same time, the flowers on the wallpaper are painted in a largely realistic and naturalistic way and silver leaf and gold leaf have been incorporated into the wallpaper? Advance booking of tickets is not necessary, but if it is full you may have to wait a while. There is limited availability for the ‘meet & greet’ moments, so if you want to be sure of a place, come on time!
guided tours of amsterdam’s oldest building
In the weekend of Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 April, the Oude Kerk will be fully open again. On both days, short (20-30 minute) tours of the highlights of Oude Kerk will start at 14:00 and 16:00 (in Dutch). Our members of the public will take you to the side rooms and show you Oude Kerk’s permanent collection. You will receive information on the history, architecture and art of the Oude Kerk. Cost: € 2.50 p/p (extra on the reduced admission price of € 9).
