Symbiosis of light and sound
Organist and composer Jacob Lekkerkerker (1975) composed a soundscape for the light installation of Children of the Light. The composition unfolds over time, over a period of forty days. Every day, when the sun goes down, Lekkerkerker plays a live soundscape on the Vater-Müller organ, supplemented with loudspeakers placed in the church that amplify the wind noise of the organ sound. Listeners determine their own perspective on sound in the space of the Oude Kerk while listening. The soundscape is played and recorded every evening. The forty sound layers that gradually arise, form the basis of the final composition. The installation Between Light can be seen daily from 14 May to 21 June from 10 am to 6 pm in the Oude Kerk. The symbiosis of sound and light can be experienced daily around sunset from (around) 9:30 PM – 10:00 PM.
About Children of the Light
Children of the Light is a collaboration between Christopher Gabriel (NO, 1980) and Arnout Hulskamp (NL, 1978). Light plays the leading role in their abstract and atmospheric installations. They often work together with musicians and work as guest teachers at art academies. Their work has been shown in museums around the world.
About Jacob Lekkerkerker
Composer, improviser and organist Jacob Lekkerkerker is a renowned pioneer, creating new musical experiences with organ, live electronics and in collaboration with musicians and artists. He explores the relationships between monumental architecture, the spatial sonority of organs and PA-systems, and musical behavior. Jacob has received numerous distinct awards for his work, including the Sweelinck-Müller Prize.
