A special evening concert at the Oude Kerk featuring Meredith Monk's renowned Piano Songs. The duet will be performed by the young talented pianists Gianmarco Moneti and Alessandra di Gennaro. Monk is best known as a composer of groundbreaking vocal music and her unique approach to the human voice. For over 50 years, she has explored the voice as a standalone instrument. This cycle by Monk is based on previously composed vocal music written between 1971-2006. Before Monk began composing music for the voice, she, as a music student, wrote short piano studies inspired by examples from famous composers such as Mompou, Satie, and Bartók. In her piano music, directness, purity, asymmetry, and especially transparency are key elements.
*After the concert, the retrospective exhibition Meredith Monk: Calling will be on view. Read more about the exhibition here.
