This painting of the Oude Kerk’s interior was produced by the famous Dutch painter Emanuel de Witte (Alkmaar 1617 – Amsterdam 1692) in the period 1650–1675. The painting depicts the church’s nave, viewed from the west side.
De Witte specialized in painting church interiors. Like no other, he knew how to capture the sunlight that enters through high church windows and reflects on the pillars and walls. He painted the Oude Kerk frequently and not always truthfully. He freely interpreted the interior if, in his opinion, it produced a more beautiful picture. The painting can be found in the Church Warden’s Office.
