Drawing of the Ijzeren Kapel

Kunst en erfgoed
This drawing by Gerrit Lamberts (1776–1850) depicts the Iron Chapel which is situated above one of the libraries, the present-day Museum Shop. For many years the toll privilege from 1275 was kept in this chapel. This toll privilege is regarded as the city’s birth certificate and is the first extant document in which ‘Amstelledamme’ is mentioned. Besides being an artist, Lamberts was also curator of the Rijksmuseum when it was still housed in the Trippenhuis, or Trip House.
