“It came to me one day that I needed to return to the island. This time with me as his passenger.
I would return, get in the car, and retrace the route, nothing more.
We might stop at the spot, as if it were a portal.”
On 25 January the short film: De Rit will premiere in the Sint Sebastiaanskapel in the Oude Kerk. This latest work by the Amsterdam artist duo PolakVanBekkum will take you to an island. Two people return together to a life-defining event that has ever touched them deeply. After the performance you can still wander through the dark church for a moment of reflection with a hot cup of tea.
De Rit is a novelty in the oeuvre of artist duo PolakVanBekkum. In De Rit, autobiographical events play a role for the first time. For the cinematic expression of their personal colored story, the artists used a sound recording in combination with a recorded route. What you see are Google Earth satellite images that determine the contours of space. What you hear is surround sound, which works with five speakers. The effect is a pronounced spatial narrative experience. Space and movement form the parameters of the work within which the artists take the audience back into the past. The overwhelming architecture of the Oude Kerk plays in the background and gives the performance an extra dimension.
The Amsterdam artist duo Esther Polak and Ivar van Bekkum collaborate under the name PolakVanBekkum. Their work is about mobility and landscape. PolakVanBekkum: “In our fascination with movement, we are always looking for ways to capture the moment when something happens. Every movement changes the experience of space. ”
