playing the cathedral – benefit concert

11 May 2019

On 11 May the Oude Kerk celebrates a new musical future with a legendary benefit dinner and concert entitled Playing the Cathedral.

benefit concert and dinner
Philip Glass plays the restored Vater-Müller organ on 11 May. With the composition Building (part of the opera Einstein On The Beach from 1976), Glass’s work is combined with the latest light work by the Amsterdam artists Children of the Light for one night only. Nicolás Jaar will premiere with Voula, the composition he created during his residency in the Oude Kerk. Artvark Saxophone Quartet and Leo van Doeselaar play new arrangements by Sweelinck and Vivaldi. Star chef Robert Kranenborg provides the evening’s menu.

All proceeds go to a new music fund, which offers talented sound artists and musicians the opportunity to compose new work that resonates within the 800-year-old architecture of the Oude Kerk. The first concert on May 12 is also made possible with the benefit concert. Reserve a seat and become a guest of all Playing the Cathedral concerts for the next five years.

playing the cathedral
Playing the Cathedral is a new monumental concert series that breathes new life into the future of music in the Oude Kerk. The Vater-Müller organ – the fully restored baroque organ -, international composers, musicians and of course the area of the Oude Kerk itself play the main roles in the concert series. With this series, in addition to the current leading position in the visual arts, the Oude Kerk wants to put itself on the map as an international music stage for spatial music. See playingthecathedral.org for further information.
