On 8 June 2022, the Oude Kerk will be closed due to a special event to celebrate the opening of the Majoor Bosshardthuis Salvation Army. The official opening by Queen Máxima takes place today and is preceded by a gathering in the Oude Kerk. The Oude Kerk is happy to make its space available to our Salvation Army neighbours for this special occasion.
opening majoor bosshardt house army of salvation
At Oudezijds Voorburgwal number 14, there is a historic building where Major Alida Bosshardt, the face of the Salvation Army, lived for a number of years, sheltering vulnerable people from the inner city of Amsterdam. The house has been restored to its original state and will become a house of experience in ‘being there for others’. From 16 June, the house will open its doors and tours will be given on Thursdays and Fridays. The life and testimony of Major Bosshardt were the reason for the Salvation Army to realise the house. She has become an icon for the work of the Salvation Army, which aims to help vulnerable people in society. This year, the Salvation Army is celebrating its 135th anniversary in the Netherlands.
